Sebastian is on the Treasure Coast, so named because of the treasure found from the Spanish Galleons which wrecked offshore in the 1700s. It is 90 minutes southeast of Orlando, one hour south of Cape Canaveral, 2 1/2 hours north of Miami, and 15 minutes north of Vero Beach. It is a small town of approximately 20,000 people. It is situated along the Indian River, a 130 mile estuary which is the most bio-diverse estuary in North America. It is separated from the Atlantic beaches by Orchid Island. The Sebastian Inlet is famous for excellent fishing (redfish, tarpon, pompano, snapper, grouper, sea trout, etc.) Shore birds and dolphin are spotted year-round and manatee are here during the winter months. Sebastian has an uncrowded small town atmosphere, with the only industry being citrus groves/packing houses. Two rivers for fishing are within a ten minute drive and smimming in the Atlantic Ocean is about 20 minutes from the house, across a beautiful causeway. On our beaches, you will find pristine sand, sea oats, and turtle nests in the spring/summer. You may not see another person on the beach. You can fish for the little ones from our back yard sea wall, a pleasure my husband avails himself of almost daily when we are in Florida for the winter. Our canal backs to a nature preserve with trails and lakes.
Our brand new home (completed in Dec. '09) has three bedrooms, two baths, and a two car garage. All the bells and whistles. Bicycles for kids and adults, kayaks and a Ford Ranger for transporting gear are available. Cultural activities and shopping are found in Vero Beach. There are many golf courses, bird watching, swimming and boating, etc. in the area. We've had 3 successful exchanges; references can be provided. We're a retired couple in our early 60s.
We are open to offers and exchanges need not be simultaneous. Our Santa Fe, NM listing is #1392.
