FOR 2010-11 WE WOULD BE ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN AN EXTENDED (2 OR MORE MONTHS) EXCHANGE TO NORFOLK, ENGLAND, OR BORDERING COUNTIES).
Our home is in the lovely seaside town of Comox on the highly popular visitor destination of Vancouver Island, a half-hour flight from Vancouver International Airport, or about five hours by road and car-ferry. We have enjoyed 10 successful home exchanges in England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain,Denmark and the Netherlands in recent years and are open to simultaneous exchange proposals for
anywhere, including our previous exchange countries and North America. Joyce would love an exchange to Buenos Aires to be able to practice the Argentine Tango every day!
Our 2-bedroom plus den, 2-bathroom home is located close to parks and numerous walking trails, and just steps to the town centre and a myriad of shops. A five-minute stroll takes you to the lovely Filberg park (google the website) or to the town's delightful marina with its long pier and hundreds of pleasure boats as well as fishing vessels. Boat charters are available.
It's a very quiet area of manicured lawns and lovingly tended home gardens. There's a golf course a 2-minute walk away and several others nearby. Public tennis courts are just across the street. Popular Mount Washington Ski Hill is a half-hour drive.
This almost new corner unit has two spacious bedrooms one with a queen bed and full bath just steps away and the master bedroom has a kingbed and is ensuite. The well equipped kitchen is bright and enjoys wraparound views of the leafy neighbourhood. The computer centre is close by to the kitchen and is equipped with full internet services. The laundry room with side by side washer/dryer is adjacent. The living room is an open concept design and features an attractive electric fireplace. Each room has baseboard electric heaters with individual temperature control. The apartment is decorated with an eclectic/traditional flair and is admirably suited for up to four adults. The home has beautiful easy care laminate floors throughout except for the laundry room and bathrooms which are tiled. The yard is professionally landscaped and meticulously maintained, so there's no outside chores for our exchange guests. There is also a garage and a BMW convertible (for use only on Vancouver Island and adjacent small islands). Within short walks are lovely parks in which deer abound. On a typical morning walk you will observe deer, pheasants, harbour seals, bald eagles, Canada geese and shorebirds (plus a couple of impressive totem poles carved by local First Nations artists) as well as many friendly human faces. Local bus service takes you to neighbouring Courtenay. Just a 30-minute walk away is a wildlife sanctuary, Lazo Marsh, with viewing platforms for observing the numerous bird species, and numerous hiking trails through the adjoining forest.
The local public airport, a 5-minute drive, provides quick access to Vancouver
International Airport, a half-hour flight from Comox, for easy connections to anywhere in North America or across the seas.
Direct flights to Mexico have recently been introduced and direct flights to the U.K. are in the planning stage. A regular bus service from the nearby Comox Mall takes you to downtown Vancouver or the Vancouver International Airport via the Nanaimo-Horseshoe Bay car ferry.
If you're not familiar with this part of Canada--among the most beautiful areas in the country and certainly its most temperate with a climate virtually identical to that of Southern England--check out some of the websites including Town of Comox, Beautiful British Columbia, City of Vancouver (site of the 2010 Olympic winter games}, City of Victoria (home of world famed Butchart's Gardens and the exciting British Columbia Museum).
Conde Nast Traveler magazine readers ranked Vancouver Island as Top North American island for the seventh consecutive year.
Vancouver Island is a 1-hour, 40-minute car ferry trip from Vancouver to Nanaimo. From Nanaimo, it's a 70-minute drive north to Comox. The island is world renowned for its exciting whale watching opportunities and spectacular Long Beach on the open Pacific Ocean, near the fishing villages of Tofino and Ucluelet with their artists' enclaves. They are about a four-hour drive from Comox. Robson Bight, where the delightful killer whales (Orcas) cavort, is an hour's drive.
Patrick, 78, is a retired newspaper writer and broadcaster, while Joyce, a few years younger, operated a B & B on nearby Hornby Island for several years. We have, between us, five adult children and nine grandchildren (who do not travel with us, we hasten to add). We are actually now living apart but remain good friends and from time to time travel together to visit mutual friends in Europe.
We enjoy excellent health and thus are open to new travel adventures. We respond to ALL inquiries as a courtesy to our fellow exchangers.
